The rain fell profusely, pounding against the earth with a constant beat.

"I simply cannot comprehend why that blasted Ninetales insisted we come to fill out paperwork tonight!" a short Smeargle complained, a sour scowl present on his face. He gripped his painted tail closer to his chest, attempting to keep it out of the rain.

A young female Pichu walked next to him, holding an umbrella over him, dismissing the stray droplets that dribbled onto her fur.

"I'm sure he has a good enough reason to want us out in this weather, Master," the Pichu commented in a mild tone.

"I sure hope he does," Roland the Smeargle growled quietly in irritation.

The two Pokemon reached the door of the Guild Registrar Office. Avery the Pichu approached the door and rapped the door with a few loud, but efficient knocks. She stepped back next to her partner, or more correctly known, her master.

"I swear to Arceus, if he takes forev-" Roland was abruptly interrupted by the hasty opening of the door.

"Come in, come in! My goodness, come in! I can't believe you've all been waiting outside in the rain all this time!" the Ninetales said as he welcomed the two Pokemon inside the office, shutting the door behind him. "You could have knocked earlier, you know! My name is Callahan, or Calla, for short. I'm the guild registrar, you know. I'm quite good at it!"

"Good evening sir. It is a pleasure to meet you." Avery said in a respectful tone, dipping her head. "This is my master, Ro-"

"Oh, please allow me to take your belongings, they're all wet! I'll just hang them in front of the fireplace to dry as we go over the formalities." Callahan suggested, reaching for Roland's accessory that was tied around his tail.

Roland pulled his tail away and his face twisted into one of disgust. "Don't touch me." He said but the Ninetales' mine seemed to meander onto other topics.

"And the paperwork, of course! There will be a lot of that, don't you worry one bit!" he exclaimed in a cheery voice.

"Yes of course. We'll be happy to complete them." Avery responded while Roland just rolled his eyes at the odd Ninetales.

"You do have the forms that we've mailed you filled out, yes? That does always make things go much quicker here." Calla asked, tails flicking with interest.

"Here they are," the Pichu said. She handed him the pile of papers.

"What's this? These forms are soaking wet, and the ink has run! Goodness, we're in for a lot more paperwork than I could have hoped to dream of!" He told them, while retrieving a new, dry set of paperwork. "No matter, I have spare forms, and all the time in the world! I trust you have no pressing appointments yet, so I'll write down your information now. With your help, of course."

'This 'mon is really odd and he's got the most peculiar obsession with paperwork, it seems.' Roland thought to himself. He rolled his eyes again and sighed. 'Let's just get this over with. I'm not going to tolerate dillydallying around this peasant's office any longer by filling out silly papers.'

"Let's get right down to it, shall we? My fastest time for entering a team in the official guild registrar is a touch under a few hours; let's see if we can break the record!" Callahan exclaimed and dipped one of his tails with fresh ink. "All right now…names, please?"

"This is Smeargle here is my master. His name is Roland. I am called Avery." She explained.

"Ahh.. what.. commo- er, good names you both have! How do you spell them?"

'How dare he call my name common!' Roland thought angrily. He was going to say something to this rude commoner, but held his tongue when he saw Avery give him a soft gaze, warning him that it was bet to stay silent. He crossed his arms and wrinkled his face into a pout. "Roland. R-O-L-A-N-D. Pronounced Rah-land. Avery. A-V-E-R-Y. Pronounced Ai-vuh-ree."

"Interesting spelling! Are you foreign? French, perhaps?" Callahan inquired while finishing up his writing.

"Excuse me?" Roland asked defensively, assuming that Callahan was trying to mock him.

"Ah, no, forget it, France is just made up here, you know. Often used as comic relief. Er, just forget that." Callahan gave a nervous chuckle. The two team members gave each other a slightly puzzled look. Avery gave a barely noticeable shrug and with that Roland dismissed the odd behavior.

"Moving on!"

"What alias do you wish to give you lot of fellows? I hope it's something good! I've been so bored by Pokemon insisting to use a name like "Team Awesome" or anything of the sort. More like "Team Mediocrity," I like to think! I'm sure you have a much more original name."

"We would like to be called 'Aureate Allies'." Roland said. "I do have quite the liking for gold."

"I knew you wouldn't let me down! Is that the normal spelling, or do you insist on losing letters, or replacing them altogether entirely?" the Ninetales asked, not even taking a slight attempt at disguising his dissatisfaction.

"I prefer it spelled the proper and normal way. A-U-R-E-A-T-E A-L-L-I-E-S." Roland explained.

"And…done. All right! Next topic!" Callahan said, shifting the paperwork and dipping his tail in fresh ink again.

"You there, lad! You seem to be the leader of the team, here. Why don't you tell me about yourself? Please make it interesting! I'm not filing a police report, you know. I don't get paid for this, either. I do it for the stories people tell! Everyone has a story! Some are better than others, though. That's for sure… However, I do hope yours isn't filled to the brim with angst and darkness, you know. We have enough of that as it is with the recent crises we've been going through!"

"If you insist on weaving a yarn of incredible sadness and general malaise, please make it good. I'll discern the necessary details from your story and put it down in the log book here."

"Hmm, let's see. I'm quite short compared to most Smeargle. Pokemon love to point it out and make fun of it, but I'm going to grow, be sure of it. My fur is creamier and brighter in color, as I the top of my species. My brown markings are lighter too. My eyes are a stunning tangerine with light speckles. This orange piece of ribbon here is very important to me. It was given to me by my fiancé before…Well I'll tell you more about her later." Roland thought drifted for a moment before he continued to tell his tale.

"I've always been the center of attention when I grew up. I was the only child born to my parents so they pampered me. I loved it. And I still do. Many say I'm bossy, vain, and arrogant, but what can I say? It's probably true. But I don't really give one Magikarp about that. I'm better than them and I just can't help myself." Roland paused and smirked. "I don't like battling much so I usually have Avery get her paws dirty. I'm not too into fighting, but that doesn't mean I can't. If you manage to tick me off, I'll give you a strong dosage of Hex in your system, and we'll see how well you like that. And the thing is…I can't draw, or paint, or do anything artist for that matter. But as far as you're concerned, you don't know anything about that." Roland warned, giving Callahan a dangerous glare. "I grew up alongside the child of our family's servants, Avery, so I had someone my age to keep my company. She's my closest thing I have as a friend."

"Well you see, I was born into a rich and wealthy family of purebred Smeargle. I had everything I had ever wanted. I had a house, a family, anything I could wish for. Even a fiancé. Her parents were also very prosperous and had known each other very well before we were even born. The two of us grew up together but five years ago, my fiancé was kidnapped. They sent out search parties to look for her, but they never found her." He paused, his voice shaking. "They pretty much considered her dead after five years of searching. But I'm not weak like them. I'm not giving up on her! So I ran away, and took my favorite servant to accompany me to Tao to join a guild so I'd be able to search for her, and that's exactly what I intend to do." Roland explained but he seemed to be finish as his eyes were on floor, too distracted by his thoughts to explain anymore.

"What an enchanting tale! I can see why you'd probably like to join the Rescuers' Guild!"

"Well actually sir, we plan to join the Mer-" she was cut off, yet again by the Ninetales.

"And you there, lass, what is your story? Your leader has done an excellent job of keeping me awake at this late hour, I hope you do the same!" Callahan exclaimed, his ruby eyes bright with excitement.

"Ah…yes… Well I'm shorter than my master, as you can tell, but I'm just normally sized for a Pichu. My fur is a bright daisy yellow instead of pale yellow and my cheeks are a softer, rosy pink. My eyes are a lighter, stormy teal color with grey flecks." Avery said.

"Many 'mon say I'm very quiet, and that I won't speak unless spoken too. I don't really see much of a need in talking when I don't actually have a need to. I usually speak for my master though. I'm also said to be very polite and courteous as well." A smiled seemed to be pulling at her lips. "Though with everything I've done and I do, I've pretty much masked my emotions so much, that I don't even think I have them anymore. I'll do whatever I can to serve and please my master."

"As for my past, I was born unto my parents, who served Roland's family for as long as they could remember. They said something about how they owed their lives to them, but they never really explained much of it to me. I was born around the same time as Roland, so we grew up together. I served him. I was his favorite servant. I guess you could call him my friend. My only friend. But I would much rather refer to him as my master. It just seems more…right, I guess. When his fiancé disappeared, I felt how utterly distressed and helpless my master felt, and I wanted to do anything in my power to make him happy again. I joined in the searches to look for her, but to no avail. After five years, there was still no sign of her and everymon just seemed to give up. That just broke his heart. So he ran away from home, taking me along with him. Trust me, I would have gone whether or not I had a choice. So we came to Tao and rented out a room in the Tao Tenements so we could look for her. And now we're here to sign up in the Merchant Guild." She said, looking back up and staring the Ninetales straight in the eyes before falling silent once again.

"Very well, then! It seems I have all I need in order to register you here in our peaceful Tao Village!" Callahan gathered up his papers and brought them over to the two teammates. "Just to make sure all the facts are correct, please look over them and sign your initials at the bottom!" He noted and started towards another room, before turning back to talk to them again. "Don't forget to sign off on your belongings! You wouldn't believe how many people forget their accessories, only to leave them here with me! Please don't do that, I have so many things cluttering up my attic in dusty old boxes…" He continued to ramble on as the pair began to look through their paperwork.

'Yes yes. That all seems to be correct.' Avery thought to herself before calling Callahan back over and handed him the papers. He examined the paperwork over before speaking again.

"What's that, you say? There are only two of you? Of course I know that! I do have eyes, you know! What if, during your travels, you decide to recruit, or add on an extra member to your team? Would you really want them to fill out all this paperwork from scratch? There's no problem with me for that, I assure you! This is just a convenient foresight! There is only room enough for four signatures on here, though, so please, no more members than that!" Callahan chuckled and padded towards the door.

'Thank Arcues, it's finally over!' Roland thought to himself as they followed the Ninetales back to the entrance.

"Well, now! I don't think I'll keep you here any longer; I have everything I need from you! I haven't broken any records for time tonight, though. Your story took up quite a bit of it!" Callahan said while an entertained smile. "Thankfully, it didn't put me to sleep. it's happened before." He mumbled too quietly for the other two to hear. "Oh well! Time to conclude our business here!" Callahan hurriedly ushered the team out of his office into the pouring rain.

"Wait! You forgot to give us back our umbrella!" Roland shouted and banged on the door. He almost fell flat on his face when the door opened quickly only to have an umbrella tossed out, which Avery skillfully caught, and shut as snappishly as it had opened.

"What a kook." Roland bluntly stated as they started home in the evening shower.
